Wizards of the Coast has revealed a comprehensive redesign of the Barbarian class for the upcoming Dungeons and Dragons 2024 Player’s Handbook. The overhaul aims to make the Barbarian more versatile & resilient while preserving its core identity as a rage-fueled warrior.
Core Ability Enhancements: Rage Gets a Boost
The Barbarian’s signature Rage ability has received several quality-of-life improvements. Traditionally, Rage grants Barbarians various benefits based on their level & subclass. In the 2024 update, Barbarians can now regain one use of Rage after a Short Rest, making this pivotal ability more accessible throughout gameplay. Additionally, maintaining Rage has become easier, as Barbarians can now expend a Bonus Action to keep it active. These changes ensure that Barbarians can unleash their fury more frequently & for longer durations.
Weapon Mastery: New Tactical Options
In line with other martial classes like the Fighter & Paladin, Barbarians will now have access to the new Weapon Mastery subsystem. This addition is expected to provide more options & depth to the Barbarian’s combat capabilities, allowing players to customize their fighting style & tactics further.
Increased Versatility: New Abilities Introduced
The redesign introduces several new abilities to enhance the Barbarian’s versatility:
- Primal Knowledge (Level 3): This ability grants an extra proficiency & allows Barbarians to use their Strength modifier for certain skill checks while raging. For example, a Barbarian can make an Acrobatics check using their Strength modifier instead of Dexterity, showcasing their raw power.
- Instinctive Pounce (Level 7): This mobility-enhancing ability allows Barbarians to move up to half their speed when entering a rage. This feature increases the Barbarian’s battlefield presence, enabling them to quickly close in on enemies or protect vulnerable allies.
- Brutal Strikes (Level 9): This tactical option allows Barbarians to trade the advantage gained from Reckless Attacks for increased damage & debuff effects. As Barbarians level up, Brutal Strikes evolves, offering more powerful options & the ability to apply multiple debuffs in a single strike.
Revamped High-Level Abilities
Existing high-level abilities have also seen improvements:
- Relentless Rage (Level 11): Now restores hit points equal to twice the Barbarian’s level when successfully resisting being reduced to 0 HP while raging, enhancing survivability.
- Persistent Rage (Level 15): Allows Barbarians to regain all uses of Rage when rolling for initiative once per long rest, ensuring they are always ready for battle.
Subclass Overhauls: More Flexibility & Power
The subclasses for Barbarians have undergone significant changes to enhance their flexibility & power:
- Path of the Berserker: The Frenzy ability no longer causes exhaustion & instead provides additional damage on the first attack, making it a more attractive option.
- Path of the Wild Heart (formerly Path of the Totem Warrior): Offers more flexibility by allowing players to change their animal powers each time they rage, adapting to different combat scenarios.
- Path of the Zealot: Grants a pool of healing dice & the ability to spend Rage to avoid dropping to 0 Hit Points, increasing the subclass’s survivability & support capabilities.
New Subclass: Path of the World Tree
A new subclass, the Path of the World Tree, has been introduced, drawing inspiration from the mythical Yggdrasil. This addition provides Barbarians with a range of new, versatile combat abilities, further expanding the class’s playstyle options.
