Wizards of the Coast has revealed the revamped rules for the Wizard class in Dungeons and Dragons, part of the 2024 Player’s Handbook. These changes, set to be released in September, aim to enhance player versatility & enrich the overall gameplay experience.
Enhancements to Spellcasting
The core of the Wizard class improvements lies in the updated spellcasting mechanics. According to Jeremy Crawford, D&D’s lead rules designer, many of the Wizard’s enhancements are tied to the revised spell rules in the Magic Spells section of the handbook. While specific details remain under wraps, the design team has previously mentioned the introduction of new spells & the reworking of existing ones to enhance their utility. This focus on spell versatility is particularly impactful for Wizards, who are the game’s primary spellcasting specialists.
New Class Features
- Cantrip Flexibility: Wizards now have the ability to swap out cantrips after a long rest starting at 1st level. This change allows players to adjust their spellcasting toolkit to better suit the needs of their adventures.
- Scholarly Expertise: At 2nd level, Wizards gain expertise in a scholarly field, such as History or Arcana. This feature not only enriches role-playing opportunities but also provides practical benefits during gameplay, enhancing the Wizard’s utility in various scenarios.
- Spell Preparation Flexibility: By 5th level, Wizards can exchange a prepared spell with another after a short rest. This ability offers greater adaptability, allowing Wizards to tailor their spell selection to the challenges they face.
Subclass Revisions
The new Player’s Handbook will feature four distinct Wizard subclasses: Abjurer, Diviner, Evoker, & Illusionist. Each subclass has been refined to align with the overall class enhancements:
- Abjurer: This subclass benefits from an upgraded Arcane Ward feature. The forcefield now takes into account a player’s resistances & immunities before absorbing damage, significantly boosting the Abjurer’s defensive capabilities.
- Diviner & Evoker: These subclasses remain largely unchanged, preserving their traditional strengths & roles within the game. Players familiar with these subclasses can expect a seamless transition to the new rules.
- Illusionist: Illusionists gain access to several new or upgraded features, including the Phantasmal Creatures ability. This feature allows Wizards to cast Summon Beast or Summon Fey as illusions once per day without using a spell slot, though the summoned creatures have half their normal hit points. This adds a strategic layer to the Illusionist’s toolkit.
Additionally, all four subclasses receive an enhanced version of the Savant feature & gain access to additional spells within their specialty whenever they level up as a Wizard. This ensures that each subclass can further specialize & refine its unique abilities.
